community matters at beswick chatty crafts
Before I entered this space I knew that it would be something of wonder. I was invited by the incredible Sam Edwards to guest workshop some photography sessions next month, so I decided to hop along, meet the group and capture some of their essence, while chatting to them about what they were interested in photography wise so I could get planning. I found them creating gorgeous mosaic tea trays; the work is stunning, but there's so much more to it than aesthetics. Dave explained his love of the theatre: the group is proudly funded by The Royal Exchange Theatre, a place Dave animatedly told me about; from the first production he saw there in the '80's to recent trips with the group. He told me how the group had been a life line for him many times, and fondly spoke about the beautiful banners they'd made, particularly highlighting his 'mad house' addition which he described Sam helping him to cut out as he struggles with his sight. There's an image here of Gemma massaging Kat after she complained of a bad back. This is a glimpse into the intergenerational friendships and love that this group has developed and is evident throughout. The art is fab but the things beneath it are even more gorgeous - tea, chats, community, kindness, solidarity, creativity and joy. What is more beautiful than that? Needless to say, I can't wait to spend more time with these inspiring people, and am looking forward to see what they create.
